Eric Spain is a science graduate who pursued a career in telecommunications and broadcasting engineering. He is a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, joined the Hong Kong Government in 1973 and held posts in a number of departments. He has also served on a number of Government and University advisory bodies.

He has a long-standing interest in means to encourage creative thinking such as Design Method, TRIZ, and Open Space Technology.
